EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, we behold the stern visage of Emperor Phocas (547-610), also known as Flavius Phocas Augustus, the Byzantine Emperor who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 602 to 610 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Phocas' portrait exudes an air of authority and power, with his piercing gaze and tightly clenched jaw. He is depicted wearing the traditional robes and diadem of a Roman Emperor, adorned with intricate gold and jeweled decorations. The emperor's long, flowing beard adds to the regal and majestic appearance. Phocas' reign was marked by significant events in Roman history. He came to power through a military coup and was the last Roman Emperor to rule before the Empire was conquered by the Sassanian Persians under Chosroes II. Phocas' reign was also notable for his persecution of the Christian patriarch of Constantinople, John the Faster, and his involvement in the assassination of Emperor Maurice. Despite his controversial reign, Phocas' portrait remains an important historical artifact, providing a glimpse into the visual representation of power and authority during the late Roman and Byzantine periods. The copperplate engraving technique used in this image allowed for a high level of detail and precision, making it an accurate and enduring representation of Emperor Phocas. This portrait also serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of the Roman Empire, which continued to influence European art and culture long after its fall. The image of Phocas, as well as other portraits of Roman Emperors, served as a source of inspiration for later European monarchs and rulers, who sought to emulate the grandeur and majesty of the ancient Caesars and Kaisers.
