EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite copperplate engraving showcases the portrait of Flavius Glycerius, also known as Emperor Glycerius, the last Western Roman Emperor before the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD. Born around 437 AD, Glycerius was a member of the noble Roman family, the Julii, and was related to Emperor Nepos, who ruled the Western Roman Empire from 473 to 474 AD. Glycerius' reign was brief, lasting only a few months from August to December 473 AD. He was appointed by the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno, who sought to maintain a puppet emperor in the West to counteract the power of the Germanic king Odoacer, who had deposed the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustus, in 476 AD. Despite his short tenure, Glycerius is significant in Roman history as the last Roman Emperor to rule the Western Roman Empire before the Dark Ages. In this portrait, Glycerius is depicted wearing the imperial regalia, including the diadem, tunic, and cloak, signifying his imperial status. The engraving is taken from Abraham Bogaert's De Roomsche Monarchy, published in Utrecht in 1697, and is a testament to the enduring fascination with the Roman Empire and its emperors in the 17th century. The portrait also includes a token or coin bearing the image of Julius Caesar, highlighting the continuity of the Roman imperial tradition and the connection between the ancient Roman emperors and their medieval and early modern successors. The intricate details and fine lines of the engraving showcase the skill and artistry of the engraver, making this a valuable historical and artistic treasure.
