EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts Pierre de Bauffremont, comte de Charny, seigneur de Montfort (1400-1472), a prominent nobleman of the 15th century. The image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century, published in Paris in 1890. The armorial, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal, is an illustrated manuscript of great historical significance, showcasing the coats of arms of various European nobility. Pierre de Bauffremont was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive and prestigious chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Order brought together the most powerful and influential nobles of Europe, and membership was by invitation only. The emblem of the Order, the Golden Fleece, symbolized the sheared fleece of the golden wool-bearing ram, a mythical creature said to have saved Jason and the Argonauts from certain death. In the image, Pierre de Bauffremont is depicted in full armor, seated on a horse and holding a lance and shield adorned with his family's coat of arms. The coat of arms consists of a golden fleece on a blue background, a symbol of his membership in the Order of the Golden Fleece. The image captures the grandeur and opulence of the 15th century European nobility, and serves as a testament to the power and influence of the Order of the Golden Fleece during this period.
