EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the Imperial Public House in Fulham, London, during the 1930s. The Imperial, located at SW6 2ET, was a beloved local pub that held a rich history. As the image reveals, the building was once a grand and imposing structure, adorned with ornate detailing and boasting a distinctive facade. The back of this print provides valuable context to the photograph, revealing that the Imperial had been in operation since at least 1929 and continued to thrive until 1956. Sadly, the pub was demolished in 1937, making this photograph a precious reminder of a bygone era. The Imperial Public House was once part of the Charrington and Company Limited's extensive network of pubs. Charrington's, a well-known name in the British pub industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, played a significant role in the production and distribution of beer and other alcoholic beverages. The company's influence extended far beyond London, with pubs and breweries scattered throughout England and Wales. Despite the Imperial's demise, this photograph remains an essential piece of social history. It offers a glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the people and communities that once gathered within its walls. The Imperial Public House may no longer exist, but its memory lives on through images like this one, which serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of public houses and the role they play in shaping our collective history.
