EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the 1930s, showcases the exterior of the Freemasons Public House located in Wood Green, London (N22 5JH). The image offers a glimpse into the past, as the pub, with its distinctive corner design, stands proudly against the backdrop of the bustling urban landscape. The Freemasons PH was once a beloved local institution, having served the community since at least 1933, as evidenced by the trading record on the reverse of the print. The photograph, taken in 1936, captures the charm and character of the building, which was a popular gathering place for residents of Wood Green and beyond. The pub, which was not affiliated with the Freemasons company, was a staple in the area for decades. Sadly, the Freemasons PH, like many historic buildings, was not immune to the relentless march of progress. By July 2018, the pub had been demolished and replaced by a Tesco store with residential flats above. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and character that once defined Wood Green's vibrant pub scene. The image is a testament to the rich history of public houses in London, which have long played an essential role in the social and cultural fabric of the city. This photograph, taken over eighty years ago, invites us to reflect on the past and appreciate the significance of these community spaces in our lives.
