EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the Duke of York Public House in Clapham, London, as it looked in the early 1900s. The image, taken in the 1910s, shows the pub's ornate and intricately designed exterior, with its distinctive tiled sign and decorative brickwork. The Duke of York was a popular local watering hole, having been established long before the turn of the century. The pub, which was located at 168 Clapham High Street, was originally built by the Charrington and Company Limited in the late 19th century. However, by the early 1900s, it had fallen into disrepair and was in need of major renovations. In 1919, the pub was demolished and rebuilt, losing some of its original charm in the process. Despite the renovations, the Duke of York remained a beloved institution in the Clapham community. The pub's rich history and character can still be seen in this photograph, which offers a glimpse into the past and the evolution of this iconic London establishment. The address of the pub, as it appeared in 1918, is detailed on the reverse of the print: Duke of York PH, Clapham (Old), London, SW4 6SH.
