EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jacob Ludwig Admiral in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects) published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774, showcases the fascinating transformation of the Phoenix moth, Eulithis prunata. The image captures the intricate details of the moth's various stages of development, from the juvenile caterpillar and larva, to the pupa, and finally, the adult moth. The Phoenix moth, also known as the Root Borer Moth or the Carrot Moth, is a native of Europe and Asia. The moth's name derives from the striking resemblance of its pupa to a phoenix, with its bright red and orange colors and the distinctive "tail" at the end. The adult moth is a beautiful sight to behold, with its wings spread wide, revealing intricate patterns and vibrant colors. Admiral's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the engraving, which captures the delicate textures and subtle colorations of each stage of the moth's life cycle. The hand-coloring further enhances the image, adding depth and vibrancy to the already stunning details. This engraving is one of the 33 plates in the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten," which included eight additional plates not present in the first edition. The work was significant for its time, providing an accurate and detailed record of the metamorphoses of various insects, and remains an important historical document in the field of entomology.
