EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate print showcases the striking beauty of the Pheasant-tailed Jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus), also known as the Chinese Jacana or Parra sinensis. The Jacana is a unique wading bird native to the shallow waters of South America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. The bird in this print is depicted with its distinctive long, red legs and large, webbed feet, which allow it to walk on floating vegetation with ease. Its most notable feature, however, is the long, feathered tail that resembles the plumage of a pheasant. The male Jacana's vibrant, iridescent plumage is on full display, with its glossy green and blue feathers contrasting beautifully with the rich red and black markings on its body. The female, on the other hand, has more subdued, brownish-gray feathers with white spots. This print was drawn and engraved by the renowned English ornithologist John Latham (1740-1837) for his comprehensive work, "A General History of Birds." Latham was a pioneer in the field of ornithology, and his meticulous observations and illustrations were instrumental in advancing the scientific understanding of avian species. The print's intricate details and lifelike accuracy are a testament to Latham's skill and dedication to his craft. The Pheasant-tailed Jacana is an intriguing and visually captivating bird, and this stunning print serves as a testament to its unique beauty and importance in the natural world.
