EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Dequevauviller after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three fascinating marine species: the Permit Fish (Trachinotus falcatus), Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish (Coryphaena pelagica), and Sand Tilefish (Malacanthus plumieri). The Permit Fish, also known as the Trachinote or Faucheur, is a large, flat-bodied fish with a distinctive black spot on its side. It is a popular game fish and is highly valued for its delicious meat. The Mahi Mahi, or Caranx moreno, is a vibrant, colorful fish with a distinctive crescent-shaped body and large dorsal fin. It is also known as the Dorado or the Dolphin Fish due to its dolphin-like appearance and behavior. Mahi Mahi are highly migratory and are found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. The Sand Tilefish, or Pelagique Plumierien, is a deep-water species of tilefish. It has a brownish-gray body with a sandy coloration, which helps it blend in with the seafloor. Sand Tilefish are bottom-dwelling fish and are an important food source for larger predators. This beautiful engraving is taken from the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans by Bernard Germain de Lacepede, published in Paris in 1825 by Eymery. The illustration and engraving capture the intricate details and unique features of these three species, providing a glimpse into the rich marine life of the past.
