EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries, showcases a vibrant underwater scene from the "Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History" published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The image highlights several intriguing marine organisms and crustaceans, including the Peacock's Tail Alga, Padina pavonica (1), and various species of hermit crabs. The Peacock's Tail Alga, also known as Padina pavonica, is depicted gracefully waving in the water, its bright green fronds resembling the iridescent train of a peacock. This alga is known for its unique ability to change color based on environmental conditions, making it a captivating sight underwater. Among the hermit crabs, we find the Common Hermit Crab, Pagurus bernhardus (2), with its distinctive orange pincers and brown body. The Blue-Eyed Hermit Crab, Paragiopagurus diogenes (3), is also present, easily recognizable by its bright blue eyes and yellow-tipped claws. Lastly, the Pagurus alatus (4) can be seen in the lower left corner of the image, its elongated claws adapted for burrowing in the sand. This stunning engraving not only serves as a testament to the beauty and diversity of the marine world but also offers a glimpse into the natural history research of the 19th century.
