The illustration was meticulously engraved by Corsi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The Papaya tree, also known as Carica papaya or Pawpaw, is a large herb native to Central America and southern Mexico. The tree's large, elongated leaves encircle a central stem, and it bears edible fruit that grows directly from the trunk. The fruit, often referred to as a papaya, is a rich source of vitamins A and C, and its sweet, musky flavor and soft, juicy texture make it a popular tropical delicacy.
