EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, hailing from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages," published in Metz, 1810, showcases an impressive display of Orders of Chivalry from the Middle Ages. The image features six distinct Orders represented by their respective insignia. At the center, the Chain of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George (363) is depicted, adorned with the image of Saint George slaying the dragon. This Order, founded in 1452, is one of the oldest and most prestigious chivalric orders still in existence. To the left, the Chain of the Order of Cyprus, also known as the Order of Silence (Orden des Stillschweigens, 364), is displayed. This Order, founded in 1307, was known for its members' vow of silence. The Cross of the Order of St. Blaise (365) is shown next, featuring a cross with the image of St. Blaise, the patron saint of healers. This Order was founded in the 11th century and is still active today. The Cross of the German Order (366) is represented by a white cross on a black background. This Order, also known as the Teutonic Order, was founded in 1190 and is one of the oldest surviving European institutions. The Shield of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary (367) is shown, bearing the image of the Virgin Mary and the Child. This Order, founded in 1211, is dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin Mary. Lastly, the Chain of the Most Noble Order of the Garter (368) is depicted, featuring the St. George's Cross and the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Shame on him who thinks evil of it). This Order, founded in 1348, is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in the British monarchy.
