Operation Veritable Memorial, Groesbeek, Holland

Shaped like an airborne canister, or the Tinman in the Wizard of Oz film, this metal Memorial records on the back that on 17/18 September 1944, Red Devils of 508th PIR landed with artillery by parachute and glider. Devils or Angels they came to shield the district of Nijmegen. Pilgrim - no matter the name or the colour, shield the vulnerable. There is an interesting mix of references here as the red devil description is usually attached to British airborne forces, and the 508th is known as the Devils in Baggy Pants. On the front is recorded - From this point around 300, 000 British and Canadian soldiers set off on Montys Operation Veritable. Pilgrim, strive with whatever it takes to realise your ideals. 16 September 1990. The Memorial was erected by C. Hectors, A. van Grinsen and Father Thuring. 2001 Airborne Canister Holland Operation Records Shaped Wizard Tinman Veritable

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Operation Veritable Memorial in Groesbeek, Holland, stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the Allied forces during World War II. Shaped like an airborne canister or the Tinman from the Wizard of Oz film, the metal Memorial is a unique and poignant tribute to the Red Devils of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), who landed in the area on September 17 and 18, 1944. The back of the Memorial records the historic event: "From this point around 300,000 British and Canadian soldiers set off on Monty's Operation Veritable." The Red Devils, also known as the Angels or Devils in Baggy Pants, arrived with artillery by parachute and glider to shield the district of Nijmegen. The phrase "Pilgrim, strive with whatever it takes to realize your ideals" is inscribed on the front, encouraging us all to persevere in our pursuits. The Memorial was erected in 2001 by C. Hectors, A. van Grinsen, and Father Thuring. Operation Veritable, a major Allied offensive, began on February 8, 1945. This photograph, taken in 2001, captures the Memorial's timeless beauty and the enduring legacy of the brave soldiers who fought to protect the vulnerable. No matter the name or the color, may we all be inspired by their unwavering determination and commitment to their ideals.
