EDITORS COMMENTS
Nait Ram, a Sunat Brahmin from Coel, Allyghur, Aligarh, is depicted in this striking 19th century photograph. Belonging to the Sunat or Sutra caste, the Sunats were traditionally engaged in the occupation of barbers and shave-smiths. They were considered to be of the lowest rank among the Brahmins, but were still regarded as part of the sacred Hindu caste system. The Sunat Brahmin community is indigenous to the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In this portrait, Nait Ram is shown wearing the traditional attire of his community, which includes a white dhoti and a red gamcha (a type of cloth) wrapped around his waist. His long, matted hair is tied in a bun at the back of his head, a common practice among Sunat Brahmins. His face bears the distinct marks of a shave-smith, indicating his occupation. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of India during the Victorian era. The People of India: A Series of Photographic Illustrations, with Descriptive Letterpress, of the Races and Tribes of Hindustan was published under the order of the Viceroy, Lord Canning, in the late 1860s. The series aimed to document the various races and tribes of India, providing a visual record of the country's ethnographic and historical significance. Nait Ram's portrait offers a glimpse into the daily life and traditions of the Sunat Brahmin community during this era. His grand and dignified demeanor, despite his low caste status, underscores the complexities and nuances of the Hindu caste system and the rich cultural heritage of India.
