EDITORS COMMENTS
Myrrh, scientifically known as Commiphora myrrha or Balsamodendron myrrha, is a small, thorny tree native to the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa. This handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, based on a botanical illustration by David Blair, captures the beauty and intricacy of the myrrh tree in its prime. Myrrh has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, with records dating back to ancient Egypt, where it was highly valued for its aromatic resin. The tree's bark is cut to release the resin, which is then steam-distilled to produce the fragrant essential oil. Myrrh has been used traditionally to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote wound healing. It was also used as an embalming agent and as an ingredient in perfumes and incense. The tree's gum resin has a bitter, pungent, and sweet taste, and was used as a flavoring agent in ancient recipes. The illustration shows the tree in its natural habitat, with its small, yellow flowers and red-brown bark covered in resin. The handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, highlighting the tree's intricate details and the vibrant colors of its flowers. This beautiful and historic print is a testament to the enduring fascination with the natural world and the medicinal plants that have shaped human history.
