EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print from the Mary Evans Picture Library showcases a collection of Midland, Metropolitan, Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railways (M&MLR) locomotives from the period between 1852 and 1886. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of railway locomotive design during this transformative era in transportation history. The first engine illustrated is the Midland Railway's "Theodore," a 2-2-2 Atlantic type locomotive, built in 1852. With outside cylinders and a total length of 28 feet 6 inches, this engine was an early example of the Atlantic class, which featured a boiler and cylinders under a single smokebox. Next is the Metropolitan Railway's "Comet," a 0-6-0 tank locomotive, built in 1864. Measuring 23 feet 6 inches in length, this engine was an essential workhorse on the Metropolitan Railway's urban lines. Its compact size and ability to carry water and fuel onboard made it ideal for the dense, congested conditions of the city. The Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway's "Class 1" 0-4-2T tank locomotive, built in 1886, is also depicted. With a total length of 25 feet 1 inch, this engine was a significant improvement over earlier designs, featuring a more powerful engine and improved boiler design. The photograph is further enhanced by the inclusion of scenes from the railway, such as the iconic High Level Bridge in Newcastle, which was completed in 1885. The image offers a unique perspective on the integration of these powerful machines into the landscape, as they traversed the country's expanding railway network.
