EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Monkeys of the River Orinoco, Guiana, South America," was created by renowned naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and master engraver Nasi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" published in Florence, Italy, in 1842. The image showcases an intriguing assemblage of monkey species native to the Orinoco River Basin in South America. The three-striped night monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), depicted in the upper left corner, is a nocturnal primate with distinctive stripes on its back. The red-backed saki (Pithecia chiropotes), located in the center, is recognized by its long, bushy tail and bright red hindquarters. The black-headed uakari (Cacajao melanocephalus) in the lower left is easily identified by its black face and white fur, while the ursine howler monkey (Alouatta arctoidea) in the lower right is known for its large size and powerful howls. The presence of these five monkey species in this engraving reflects Humboldt's extensive knowledge and exploration of the natural world. His groundbreaking work in biology, geography, and anthropology significantly contributed to the scientific understanding of South America and its diverse inhabitants, both human and animal. This image is a testament to Humboldt's passion for documenting the natural world and the artistry of Nasi's engraving technique.
