EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock print depicts the Mexican marigold or Aztec marigold, Tagetes erecta, a vibrant and iconic flower native to Mexico and Central America. The image is based on an illustration by Giorgio Liberale, as featured in Pietro Andrea Mattioli's "Discorsi di P.A. Matthioli ne i sei libri della Materia Medicinale di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo," published in Venice in 1568 by Vincenzo Valgrisi. Mattioli, an Italian botanist and physician, dedicated himself to the study and documentation of medicinal plants, drawing from the works of ancient Greek and Roman authors such as Dioscorides. In this work, he provides detailed descriptions and illustrations of various plants, including the Mexican marigold, which was highly valued by the Aztecs for its medicinal properties and use in religious ceremonies. The Mexican marigold is characterized by its bright orange-yellow or red-brown flowers, which bloom in large, dense heads atop tall stems. The plant is a popular ornamental and is often used in gardens for its attractive appearance and fragrance. In traditional Mexican culture, marigolds are associated with the Day of the Dead celebrations, with the flowers believed to guide the spirits of the deceased back to the living world. This beautiful woodblock print by Wolfgang Meyerpick captures the essence of the Mexican marigold, showcasing its intricate details and vibrant colours. The meticulous hand-colouring adds depth and texture to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical or herbal collection.
