The image is based on an illustration by Giorgio Liberale, as featured in Pietro Andrea Mattioli's "Discorsi di P.A. Matthioli ne i sei libri della Materia Medicinale di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo," published in Venice in 1568 by Vincenzo Valgrisi. Mattioli, an Italian botanist and physician, dedicated himself to the study and documentation of medicinal plants, drawing from the works of ancient Greek and Roman authors such as Dioscorides.
