EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving, created by Lagesse after a scientific illustration by F. Gerard, showcases a collection of meteorological instruments from the 19th century. At the center, Daniel Rutherford's minimum thermometer (1) is depicted, an essential tool for recording the lowest temperature reached during a specific time period. Adjacent to it, a three-scale thermometer with a built-in hygrometer (2) is displayed. This innovative design allowed scientists to measure both temperature and humidity levels in a single instrument. The pronosticon (3), represented on the right side of the image, was a weather forecasting device used to predict the weather based on historical data and astronomical observations. Lastly, a hair-tension hygrometer (4) is illustrated at the bottom. This device measured humidity by observing the changes in the tension of horsehair when exposed to varying moisture levels. This intricately detailed engraving is an exquisite example of the scientific advancements during the 19th century, particularly in the field of meteorology. The image is taken from Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincq's comprehensive work, "La Regne Vegetal: Horticulture: Jardin Potager et Jardin Fruitier," published by L. Guerin in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant handcolours make this engraving a stunning addition to any collection of historical scientific illustrations.
