The Memorials area St Aubin, Juno Beach, Normandy

The main infantry and armoured forces landed centrally on each of the five landing beaches. Between them landed Special Forces tasked with taking out German strongpoints and then linking the main units together. The Canadian North Shore Regiment landed here as did 48 RM Commando with the job of clearing east towards the British on Sword Beach. The bunker in the centre of the picture held a 50mm gun which had to be silenced using two tanks and a Royal Marine Centaur. Date: 2009

Armoured Beaches Between Centrally Forces Infantry Landed Landing Linking Main Special Taking Tasked Units

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Memorials area at St. Aubin's sur Mer, Juno Beach in Normandy, France. On June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, the main infantry and armored forces of the Allied invasion landed centrally on each of the five designated beaches. Among these forces were the Canadian North Shore Regiment and 48 Royal Marine Commando. Their mission was twofold: to take out German strongpoints and then link up with the main units advancing inland. The central bunker in this image once held a formidable 50mm gun, a significant obstacle for the advancing Allied forces. To neutralize this threat, two tanks and a Royal Marine Centaur were employed. The successful silencing of this gun allowed the Allied forces to press on towards their objectives, ultimately contributing to the success of the D-Day landings. This photograph, taken in 2009, serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination displayed by the soldiers who landed on Juno Beach 65 years prior. The enduring legacy of their sacrifices can still be felt in the Memorials area, which stands as a testament to the historical significance of this pivotal moment in World War II history.
