Memorial Chapel to St Mary of the Flowering Betuwe
This Chapel was erected in 1946 in commemoration of heavy fighting that took place around this area in September-October 1944 following the Market Garden Operation. On 1 October there was a fierce battle between the 7th Green Howards and the 10th Panzer Division who attacked this high point (the land generally is so flat that any slight rise of a few feet is deemed to be a hill). The Chapel has been lovingly attended by the Jansen Family - by Kurt who came daily to change the flowers until his death in 1991, and then by his niece Grada. The display of flowers and plants is beautiful. Inside are several photos, a tribute by Grada to her uncle and a poem by an English veteran praising her faithfulness. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
Memorial Chapel to St. Mary of the Flowering Betuwe: A Symbol of Resilience and Remembrance This evocative image captures the Memorial Chapel to St. Mary of the Flowering Betuwe, a poignant reminder of the heavy fighting that took place in this area during September-October 1944. Erected in 1946, this chapel stands as a testament to the fierce battle between the 7th Green Howards and the 10th Panzer Division, who clashed over this small but significant high point. The flat landscape around it, where even a slight rise of a few feet is considered a hill, adds to the significance of this memorial. The chapel has been lovingly tended by the Jansen Family for over six decades. Kurt, a dedicated caretaker, visited daily to change the flowers until his passing in 1991. His niece, Grada, has continued his legacy, ensuring the chapel's display of flowers and plants remains a beautiful tribute to the past. Inside the chapel, several photographs and a heartfelt message from Grada honor her uncle's commitment. An English veteran, moved by Grada's faithfulness, penned a poem praising her dedication to the chapel and the memories it holds. This image, taken in 2000, encapsulates the enduring spirit of remembrance and the power of resilience in the face of adversity. The Memorial Chapel to St. Mary of the Flowering Betuwe stands as a symbol of hope and healing, a place where the past and the present converge in a poignant and meaningful way.
