EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Mediterranean snakelocks sea anemone, Anemonia sulcata, also known as Actinia viridis or Attenia verde. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is celebrated as one of the greatest illustrators of the 19th century for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The Mediterranean snakelocks sea anemone is a type of hydrozoan, characterized by its long, wavy, tentacle-like appendages that resemble snakelocks. This sea anemone is commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea and is adapted to life on floating rafts and sailors' ships. The engraving captures the sea anemone in its vibrant, purple hue, with its tentacles undulating in the wind, giving the impression of a tiny sail or velella, known as a by-the-wind sailor. The little, bislunga (two-lobed) body of the anemone is also visible, nestled among the waving tentacles. The copperplate stipple engraving technique used to create this illustration involved the application of ink to a copper plate using a series of tiny stippling tools, resulting in a textured, three-dimensional effect that beautifully highlights the intricacies of the Mediterranean snakelocks sea anemone's form.
