Marie Louise, Empress of France and Duchess of Parma: A Regal Portrait from the Age of Napoleon This exquisitely hand-colored lithograph showcases the elegant and resplendent image of Marie Louise, Empress of France and Duchess of Parma. Born in 1791, Marie Louise was the second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, the legendary French military and political leader. Their marriage took place in 1810, when Marie Louise was just 18 years old, and it was a strategic union aimed at strengthening Napoleon's hold on the Austrian territories. The portrait captures the young empress in a sumptuous gown adorned with intricate gold embroidery and a lavish train. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, adorned with pearls and diamonds, and her regal expression conveys a sense of poise and confidence. The background features a grand, ornate setting, further emphasizing her imperial status. Marie Louise's reign as empress was brief, as Napoleon was exiled in 1814, and she was later forced to abdicate in 1815. However, her impact on European history was significant, as she played a role in the Congress of Vienna and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France. After her marriage was annulled, she went on to become the Duchess of Parma and ruled the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza until her death in 1847. This stunning lithograph is taken from Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France, a renowned collection of historical costumes published in Paris in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors bring the image to life, offering a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Napoleonic era.
