EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Margaret Stewart, also known as Marguerite d'Ecosse or Marguerite of Scotland, in her role as Dauphine of France from 1424 to 1445. Margaret was the eldest daughter of King James I of Scotland and his first wife, Joan Beaufort, who was the daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and Katherine Swynford. At the age of 12, Margaret was betrothed to the future King Louis XI of France, who was 25 years her senior. The marriage was arranged to strengthen the alliance between Scotland and France and to secure the Scottish throne for the Stewart dynasty. The portrait, which is based on a painting from Roger de Gaignières portfolio VI 142, shows Margaret in regal attire, wearing a richly decorated robe of purple velvet, trimmed with ermine fur and adorned with pearls and other precious stones. Her headdress, which consists of a tall, conical structure topped with a jeweled net veil, is a typical representation of the high fashion of the time for noblewomen. Margaret's expression is serene and confident, reflecting her status as a powerful and influential figure in the French court. Margaret's tenure as Dauphine was marked by political intrigue and conflict, as she navigated the complex web of alliances and power struggles that characterized the French court. Despite these challenges, she remained a devoted wife and mother, bearing Louis XI three children before her untimely death at the age of 28. Margaret's legacy as a Scottish queen and French dauphine continues to fascinate historians and genealogists, making this portrait a valuable and intriguing glimpse into the past.
