EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, titled "Marbled white, Spanish gatekeeper, almond ringlet, and spring ringlet. Satyre demi-deuil, Satyre pasiphae, Satyre ceto, Satyre epistygne," is a stunning example of natural history art from the "Histoire des Papillons" series published by Hippolyte and Polydor Pauquet in Paris in 1833. The print showcases an intriguing arrangement of various butterfly species, each meticulously depicted in vivid detail. The Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) is shown in the upper left corner, its wings adorned with intricate patterns of black, white, and gray. The Spanish Gatekeeper (Pyronia bathseba), with its vibrant orange wings and black borders, is depicted in the center. The Almond Ringlet (Erebia alberganus) and Spring Ringlet (Erebia epistygne), both with delicate, pastel-colored wings, are arranged below the larger butterflies. The lower portion of the print features four species of Satyrids, or Saturniid butterflies. The Satyre demi-deuil, Satyre pasiphae, Satyre ceto, and Satyre epistygne are depicted in various poses, their wings spread wide to reveal intricate patterns and colors. Each butterfly is named in both Latin and French, reflecting the international scientific community of the time. The lithograph was produced using a labor-intensive process that involved drawing on a limestone plate with a greasy crayon, then treating the plate with a mixture of water, gum arabic, and ink. The plate was then wiped clean, leaving the grease lines visible, and inked. The image was transferred to paper using a press, and the colors were added by hand. The result is a beautifully detailed and vibrant work of art that captures the essence of these fascinating insects.
