EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured stipple engraving depicts the Maqui, or Chilean Wineberry, Aristotelia chilensis (also known as Aristotelia macqui), a small shrub native to Chile and southwestern Argentina. The engraving is based on an original illustration by the renowned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute, created for Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's Traite des Arbres et Arbustes (Treatise on Trees and Shrubs), published in Paris between 1804 and 1819. The Maqui shrub is characterized by its glossy, evergreen leaves and clusters of small, dark purple-blue berries. The fruit is rich in anthocyanins, polyphenols, and vitamin C, making it a popular ingredient in the traditional medicine and food of the Mapuche people of Chile and Argentina. The Maqui berry is now gaining international recognition for its potential health benefits, including its antioxidant properties. The intricate details of the Maqui shrub are beautifully captured in this handcoloured engraving, with each leaf, berry, and vein rendered with meticulous precision. The use of stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the image, bringing out the subtle variations in colour and form. The delicate touch of the handcolourist further enhances the natural beauty of the Maqui shrub, making this a truly exquisite work of botanical art.
