EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a hand-colored copperplate engraving depicting a man, woman, and child from the Orthodox Christian community of Souli in Epirus, Greece. The Souliotes, as they were known, were a renowned Albanian-speaking community situated in the mountainous region of Epirus, along the northwestern coast of the Greek mainland. The illustration is taken from Francois Pouqueville's "Travels through Morea, Albania, and Several Other Parts of the Ottoman Empire," published in 1805. The engraving was created by Dell Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti for Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's "Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti)" published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. The man, dressed in traditional Albanian clothing, wears a fez and holds a long staff, while the woman, wearing a flowing dress and headscarf, cradles their young child. The family's somber expressions and the rugged mountainous landscape in the background suggest a life of hardship and resilience. The Souliotes were known for their fierce independence and their strong adherence to the Orthodox Christian faith, which made them a target of Ottoman oppression. Despite the challenges they faced, the community managed to preserve its unique culture and traditions. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the lives of these intrepid people and the rich history of the Orthodox Christian community in Epirus, Greece.
