EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases an intriguing scene of Malabar thryssa, also known as Blochs gizzard shad (Thryssa malabarica), swimming amongst sardines and anchovies. The Malabar thryssa is a tropical fish native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific. In the foreground of the image, we observe French fishermen employing traditional methods to catch these small, silvery fish. They use lamps and special nets called rissoles to attract and capture their quarry. The use of lamps, which illuminated the water at night, was a common practice in Mediterranean and Atlantic fisheries during this period. Rissoles were made of fine mesh, allowing the smaller fish to pass through while retaining larger ones. The Malabar thryssa, with its distinctive elongated snout and dark lateral stripe, is depicted in the upper right corner of the print. Nearby, we find the Blochs gizzard shad (Nematalosa nasus), another tropical fish species, which is easily distinguishable by its lighter coloration and rounded snout. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was a significant figure in the field of ichthyology during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His encyclopedia, which documented over 1,000 species of fish, was considered a groundbreaking work in the natural sciences. This enchanting image not only showcases the beauty of these fish species but also provides a glimpse into the traditional fishing techniques employed during that era.
