Louise Francoise de La Baume Le Blanc, Duchesse de La Valliere, is depicted in this exquisitely hand-colored lithograph, a portrait of the renowned mistress of King Louis XIV. The image, created by Breton after the original painting by Mignard, is taken from Roger de Gaignières's "Costumes Historiques de la France," published in Paris in 1852 by the Administration de Librairie. Louise de La Valliere, born in 1644, first caught the eye of the young and powerful King Louis XIV during a masquerade ball in 1661. Their passionate affair lasted for several years, and she became one of the most influential women at the French court.
