EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Louis II du Bouchet, Marquis de Sourches: A Nobleman of the Ancien Régime" Louis II du Bouchet, Marquis de Sourches, Comte de Montsoreau (1711-1788), was a prominent French nobleman and statesman during the Ancien Régime. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph, created by C. Breton after a painting from Le Bibliophile Jacob's "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a captivating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the 18th century French court. The Marquis de Sourches is depicted here during the coronation of King Louis XV, which took place on September 29, 1722, at the Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral. The nobleman wears the regal attire befitting his high rank, including a velvet robe edged with ermine fur and a sumptuous hat adorned with ostrich plumes. The rich colors and intricate details of his costume, as well as the ornate decorations of the cathedral in the background, serve to underscore the magnificence of the Ancien Régime's courtly culture. Born into a noble family, Louis II du Bouchet began his political career under the tutelage of Cardinal Fleury and later served as the Governor of Brittany and the Ambassador to the Holy Roman Empire. He was known for his diplomatic skills and his ability to navigate the complex political landscape of the Ancien Régime. The Marquis de Sourches' legacy extends beyond his political achievements, as he was also a patron of the arts and a prominent figure in the literary and intellectual circles of his time. This evocative image of Louis II du Bouchet at the coronation of Louis XV not only captures the essence of the Ancien Régime's opulence and grandeur but also offers a window into the life of a remarkable nobleman who played a significant role in French history.
