Louis-Hector, Duc de Villars, in Ceremonial Robes for the Coronation of Louis XIV: A Regal Portrait in Historical Detail This exquisite handcoloured lithograph captures the grandeur and opulence of Louis-Hector, Duc de Villars, as he stands in his ceremonial robes, prepared for the coronation of King Louis XIV of France in 1654. The portrait, derived from an original painting housed in the Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolios, offers an intriguing glimpse into the rich history and intricate details of French court attire during the Ancien Régime. The Duc de Villars, a prominent military figure and statesman, is depicted wearing an elaborate ensemble befitting his high rank. His ermine-trimmed manteau, or mantle, is made of sumptuous velvet, its deep red hue contrasting beautifully with the pristine white fur. The manteau is fastened at the shoulders with large, golden-embroidered buttons and is draped over a voluminous, knee-length robe. The robe itself is adorned with intricate gold braid and embroidery, further emphasizing the wearer's noble status. Atop the Duc's head rests a magnificent coronet, its gold band encrusted with precious gems and pearls. The crown, a symbol of royal power and authority, adds an air of regality to the portrait. The Duc's collar, a sign of his high office as Connetable (Constable) of France, is also prominently displayed around his neck. This stunning image, produced by the renowned French publishing house Le Bibliophile Jacob under the direction of Paul Lacroix, offers a captivating glimpse into the grandeur and splendour of the French court during the reign of Louis XIV. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colours of the handcoloured lithograph bring the portrait to life, transporting us back to a time when opulence and ceremony reigned supreme.
