EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Lieutenant Alfred Brandon, New Zealand's Courageous Lawyer-Pilot: The Victoria Cross Hero Who Destroyed Two Zeppelin Airships in World War I". This photograph portrays Lieutenant Alfred Brandon (1883-1974), an exceptional New Zealander who combined the professions of a lawyer and military aviator with remarkable bravery. During World War I, Brandon served in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and was credited with the destruction of two German Zeppelin airships, earning him the highest military honor – the Victoria Cross. In the summer of 1916, Brandon, a native of New Zealand, soared above the enemy lines in his Sopwith Camel biplane. As he scanned the skies for any signs of German airships, he spotted a Zeppelin, the LZ 71, drifting over French soil. Without hesitation, Brandon dared the treacherous heights, flying above the massive airship at a dangerously low altitude. With unwavering determination, he dropped a bomb onto the enemy vessel, causing it to crash in flames. Brandon's heroic act was not a solitary achievement. He had previously destroyed another Zeppelin, the LZ 73, in the same manner, just a few weeks earlier. These victories made him the first New Zealander to be awarded the Victoria Cross for valor in the skies of World War I. Brandon's legacy as a lawyer and military aviator continues to inspire generations. His courageous actions during the war demonstrated that the pursuit of justice and the defense of one's country are not mutually exclusive. This photograph serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to both his profession and his nation. Date: 1916.
