EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Lesser Puss Moth, Cerura erminea, also known as the Lesser Feline or Saturnia erminea. The moth belongs to the family Saturniidae, which also includes the well-known Emperor Moth and the Attacus and Pavonia species. The Lesser Puss Moth is a large, beautiful moth with a wingspan of up to 15 centimeters. The forewings are covered in small, white spots arranged in irregular rows, while the hindwings are solid orange with black borders. The moth's name derives from its fur-like scales, which give it a feline appearance. The life cycle of the Lesser Puss Moth involves complete metamorphosis, with distinct larval, pupal, and adult stages. The caterpillar, or larva, is a voracious feeder that can grow up to 12 centimeters long. It has a distinctive, orange and black striped body with blue and red spots. After feeding, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis, or pupa, in which it undergoes a transformation into an adult moth. This beautiful engraving was created by the skilled hand of Johann Georg Klinger and published in Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur in 1786. The work was a significant contribution to the field of entomology, documenting a wide range of Lepidoptera species in meticulous detail. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of beauty and realism to the already intricate copperplate engraving, making it a true work of art.
