EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts Labrador tea, Ledum canadense, a small shrub native to the cool, moist areas of the Northern Hemisphere. The engraving, created by George Cooke after Thomas Shotter Boys, was produced for Conrad Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet in Hackney, London, around 1825. Labrador tea is a low-growing evergreen shrub, typically reaching heights of only 15-30 cm (6-12 inches). Its small, round leaves are covered in fine hairs, giving them a silvery appearance and a velvety texture. The plant is named for its aromatic leaves, which have a distinctive tea-like scent when crushed. The Labrador tea plant is an important component of the Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, providing food and shelter for various wildlife, including caribou, moose, and Arctic hare. Indigenous peoples of the region have used the plant for medicinal purposes for centuries, brewing it as a tea to treat a variety of ailments, including colds, fevers, and digestive issues. This beautiful illustration captures the intricate details of the Labrador tea plant, from its delicate leaves to its tiny flowers, which bloom in late spring or early summer. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing out the rich greens and reds of the plant. Overall, this engraving is a testament to the beauty and importance of the natural world, and a reminder of the rich botanical knowledge of the past.
