This stunning chromolithograph depicts King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, or roi d'Hongrie, in full regal attire. The image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The illustration is derived from manuscript 4790 housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. King Matthias Corvinus (1443-1490) reigned as King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458 until his death in 1490. He was a renowned patron of the arts and sciences, and his court was a center of intellectual and artistic activity. This is reflected in his regal attire, which includes a richly embroidered tunic, a fur-trimmed mantle, and a crown adorned with precious stones. The king is shown on horseback, a common representation of noblemen in European armorials of the time. He wears the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious chivalric order founded by Philip III of Burgundy in 1430. The order's emblem, a golden fleece, is depicted on the king's banner, which is held aloft by an attendant. The intricate details of the image, from the king's ornate armor to the delicate patterns on his horse's trappings, are a testament to the skill of the chromolithographic process.
