This exquisite handcoloured lithograph captures the youthful charm and regal bearing of King Francis II of France, also known as Francois II, as the Dauphin in the late 15th century. The image is based on a portrait in the gallery of Roger de Gaignières, as featured in the renowned French publication, "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. Francis II, born in 1461, was the eldest son of King Louis XI of France and his queen, Charlotte of Savoy. At a young age, he was betrothed to Anne of Brittany, the wealthy and influential Duchess of Brittany, in an effort to secure the strategic alliance between their powerful families. The young prince is depicted here in the elegant attire of the late medieval period, wearing a richly embroidered tunic, a fur-trimmed mantle, and a nobleman's hat adorned with feathers.
