King Francis II of France (1544-1560): A Regal Portrait This hand-colored lithograph, created by L. Massard after a portrait in Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolio IX 2 from Le Bibliophile Jacob aka Paul Lacroix's Historical Costumes of France, offers a captivating glimpse into the regal presence of King Francis II of France. Born on January 12, 1544, Francis was the eldest son of King Henry II and Catherine de Medici. His reign, which began at the tender age of 14 upon his father's death, was marked by political instability and conflict. Francis II is depicted here in the full regalia of his royal office. He wears a richly embroidered robe, adorned with intricate gold and silver thread, and a velvet mantle lined with ermine fur. The king's crown, the Imperial Crown of France, sits atop his head, symbolizing his position as the monarch of France. His expression is serious and resolute, reflecting the weight of responsibility that rested upon his shoulders. The portrait, created in the mid-19th century, is a testament to the artistic skill of L. Massard and the meticulous detail of the original portrait in the Gaignières gallery. The hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, bringing the king and his regal attire to life. Francis II's reign was brief, lasting only five years, but his impact on French history was significant. His marriage to Mary, Queen of Scots, and the subsequent Wars of Religion, marked the beginning of the end of the Valois dynasty and the rise of the Bourbon monarchy. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of a young king who ruled during a tumultuous period in French history.
