EDITORS COMMENTS
King Charles X of France (1757-1836), depicted in this handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard, is shown in military uniform as a colonel in the Garde Nationale, adorned with the grand-cordon bleu sash and chain of the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece, Ordre de la Toison d'Or. The Order, established in 1430, is one of the oldest and most esteemed chivalric orders in the world, and its membership was limited to the European monarchs and their close relatives. Charles X ascended to the throne of France in 1824, following the abdication of his nephew, King Louis-Philippe I. His reign, however, was marked by political instability and economic hardships, culminating in the July Revolution of 1830 that led to his abdication and the establishment of the July Monarchy. In this image, King Charles X is seen wearing the uniform of a colonel in the Garde Nationale, a militia force established during the French Revolution to replace the disbanded royal army. The uniform consists of a red tunic with gold braid and buttons, white waistcoat, and a blue cravat. The grand-cordon bleu sash of the Order of the Golden Fleece is draped over his left shoulder, and the chain of the order is visible around his neck. The epaulettes on his shoulders bear the insignia of the order, and he holds a sword with a gilt hilt and a silver-gilt epee knot. The cravat, or chapeau-cravate, is tied in the distinctive "Windsor knot," which was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. This handcoloured lithograph is part of the "Historical Costumes of France" series by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, published in Paris in 1852. The series aimed to document and preserve the historical costumes and traditions of France, making it an invaluable resource for scholars, artists, and collectors of historical imagery.
