EDITORS COMMENTS
King Charles IX of France (1550-1574) is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph, wearing the grandeur and splendor of his ceremonial robes. The portrait, taken from Roger de Gaignières gallery (portfolio IX 7 bis), is a beautiful example of the historical costumes of the French monarchy during the Renaissance period. Charles IX is shown wearing the ermine-lined dalmatique, a long tunic with a wide, open front, revealing the ermine fur lining. The king's collar is adorned with the Fleurs-de-Lys, the symbol of the French monarchy. The ruff, a high, starched collar, adds an elegant touch to the outfit, framing the king's face. The fur-trimmed cap, or tunicelle, completes the regal appearance. The intricate details of the king's attire are brought to life through the meticulous hand-coloring technique of the lithograph. The ermine fur, the rich red and gold fabric, and the delicate Fleurs-de-Lys embroidery are all rendered with exceptional detail and precision. King Charles IX reigned from 1560 until his untimely death in 1574 at the age of 24. His reign was marked by religious and political turmoil, including the Wars of Religion, which would plague France for decades to come. Despite the challenges of his reign, Charles IX is remembered for his patronage of the arts and his efforts to promote peace and unity within the kingdom. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the French monarchy during the Renaissance period and offers a glimpse into the opulence and sophistication of the royal court.
