EDITORS COMMENTS
Joachim Murat, King of Naples and Marshal of France (1767-1815): A Regal Portrait in Historical Costume This striking handcoloured lithograph captures the enigmatic figure of Joachim Murat, a man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most powerful military commanders and monarchs of the Napoleonic era. Born in 1767 in Corsica, Murat began his military career under the French Revolution, distinguishing himself in various battles before being appointed Marshal of France by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804. In 1808, Murat was installed as King of Naples by Napoleon, a position he held until his deposition in 1815. The image, taken from the renowned French publication "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix and published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852, depicts Murat in the regal attire befitting his status as a monarch. He is shown wearing a grand, red velvet robe adorned with gold braid and a white plume, symbolizing his rank as a Marshal of France. The royal insignia of Naples, including the crown and scepter, are also prominently displayed. Murat's piercing gaze and confident posture convey a sense of determination and strength, reflecting his military prowess and political acumen. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the handcoloured lithograph further enhance the regal aura of the portrait, transporting us back to an era of grandeur and opulence. Despite his eventual downfall and execution during the Restoration, Joachim Murat remains an intriguing and significant figure in the history of Europe, a man who defied the odds and left an indelible mark on the political landscape of his time.
