EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph depicts Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860), the youngest brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, during his reign as King of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813. The image is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. Jerome Bonaparte is shown in regal attire, wearing a gold and red military uniform adorned with various orders and decorations. The royal insignia of Westphalia, including the crown and scepter, are prominently displayed. His expression is serious and confident, reflecting the responsibilities of ruling a kingdom during a tumultuous period in European history. Jerome's reign as King of Westphalia began when Napoleon, in an effort to expand his empire, forced the Elector of Hanover to abdicate and installed Jerome in his place. The kingdom of Westphalia was created from parts of the Grand Duchy of Berg and the Electorate of Hanover. Jerome's rule was marked by attempts to modernize and reform the region, but he faced numerous challenges, including opposition from local nobles and the economic strain caused by the Napoleonic Wars. This lithograph provides a glimpse into the opulent court of a European monarch during the early 19th century, offering a fascinating insight into the fashion, power dynamics, and political intrigue of the time. The intricate details of Jerome's uniform and the rich colors of the image make it a striking and captivating work of art.
