EDITORS COMMENTS
Jean Poton, Seigneur de Xaintrailles: A Portrait of a Medieval Knight and Friend to La Hire This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Jean Poton, Seigneur de Xaintrailles, a renowned French knight and trusted companion to La Hire. The image is based on a figure in the manuscript of Chroniques de Monstrelet, which is part of the extensive portfolio VI 50 from Le Bibliophile Jacob, published by Paul Lacroix in 1852. Jean Poton de Xaintrailles (d. 1461) was a significant figure during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. He rose to prominence under King Charles VII, becoming a trusted advisor and military commander. Xaintrailles was known for his bravery in battle and his strategic acumen, earning him the respect and loyalty of his king and his fellow soldiers. In this portrait, Xaintrailles is depicted wearing the full regalia of a medieval knight. He wears a gilded helmet adorned with feathers, a chainmail hauberk, and a surcoat emblazoned with his coat of arms. His shield bears the emblem of a cross pattee, a symbol of the Order of the Star, to which he belonged. The intricate details of his armor and clothing are expertly rendered in the lithograph, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship of the artist, Leopold Massard. Xaintrailles' close friendship with La Hire, another famous French knight, is well documented in historical records. The two men fought side by side in numerous battles, and their bond was strengthened by their shared loyalty to the French crown. This portrait captures the essence of their camaraderie, as well as the spirit of the medieval knightly class. The handcoloured lithograph is a beautiful testament to the rich history of medieval France and the valor of its knights. It is a reminder of the courage and dedication that defined the era, and a tribute to the enduring legacy of Jean Poton, Seigneur de Xaintrailles and his companions in arms.
