EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Japanese-style wall hanging, dating back to around 1900, showcases an intricate blend of Eastern and Western design elements. The red lacquer wood frame, adorned with a satin lambrequin and curtains, sets the stage for a captivating display of cultural fusion. Hanging from the top of the frame are the satin curtains, with intricate gold embroidery on the reverse side, and two smaller curtains made of fine silk. Suspended from the center is a wooden mask, its features delicately carved and lacquered to perfection. The main attraction of this wall hanging, however, is the embroidered silk wall hangings, which depict a series of elegant stripes in Arab tone. The design, reminiscent of traditional Japanese harem screens, is known as "croisee Genre Japonais" or "Arabesque Japanese Style." The intricate embroidery work is further accentuated by the use of contrasting colors and textures, with the silk fabric providing a rich, lustrous backdrop for the intricate stitching. The vase filled with ikebana, a traditional Japanese art form of flower arranging, adds a touch of natural beauty to the piece. This stunning wall hanging, a chromolithograph by Henry Sicard and A. Farradesche after an illustration by Ernest Foussier, is a testament to the enduring appeal of Eastern aesthetics in Western interior design during the late 19th century. Foussier, a French architect and interior decorator, was known for his innovative designs that combined various cultural influences, making this wall hanging a true masterpiece of its time.
