This striking photograph captures Field Marshal Jan Smuts, one of South Africa's most influential political and military leaders, during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the South African Forces in 1917. Born on 24 January 1870 in the Cape Colony, Smuts rose to prominence as a lawyer, academic, and statesman, playing a key role in the South African War and the founding of the Union of South Africa in 1910. During the First World War, Smuts served as both a military commander and a diplomat. In this image, he is seen in military uniform, exuding confidence and authority as he surveys the battlefield.
