EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Indian plum tree, Flacourtia indica, also known as the camoruco, manduvi, anacag ita, or chicha chica tree. The tree is native to tropical regions of the Americas, including Panama, and is now widely cultivated in other parts of the world for its delicious edible fruit. The Indian plum is a small to medium-sized tree, with a dense, rounded canopy and glossy, green leaves. The tree bears small, white, apetala flowers, which give way to round, chestnut-sized fruit that ripen from green to deep purple. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, making it an important food source for both humans and wildlife. This beautiful illustration was created by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840) for Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Stanghi and published by Batelli e Figli. Turpin was one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the true beauty of the natural world. The Indian plum tree has a rich history in traditional medicine, with the fruit and bark being used to treat a variety of ailments, including dysentery, diarrhea, and fever. The tree is also valued for its hard, dense wood, which is used for making furniture and tools. Today, the Indian plum is an important crop in many tropical regions, and its fruit is enjoyed for its sweet, tart flavor and nutritious properties.
