EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the endangered Indian lion, also known as the maneless lion or Panthera leo goojratensis. The Indian lion is a subspecies of the Asian lion, native to the Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat, India. Unlike its African counterpart, the Indian lion does not have a mane, making it easier to distinguish. The Indian lion is critically endangered, with an estimated population of only around 500 individuals remaining in the wild. The primary threats to their survival include habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. This beautiful engraving was created by Lizars, based on an illustration by Charles Hamilton Smith for William Jardine's Naturalists Library in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843. Jardine was a renowned Scottish botanist, zoologist, and natural history publisher. The Naturalists Library was a significant contribution to the scientific community, providing accurate and detailed records of various species for research and conservation efforts. The Indian lion is an apex predator and plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Its endangered status highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect this magnificent creature and preserve biodiversity. Let us all do our part to ensure that future generations can marvel at the beauty and power of the Indian lion in its natural habitat.
