EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases four different hummingbird species (Trois colibris) in their natural habitat, with a nest and two eggs nestled among the foliage. The intricate detail of this 18th century illustration, drawn from nature by Georg Wolfgang Knorr for his Deliciae Naturae Selectae (A Selection of Rare Naturalia), transports us back in time to the Kabinet van Zeldzaamheden der Natuur (Cabinet of Rarities of Nature) in Nuremberg. The hummingbirds depicted in this engraving are likely from the collections of Johann Ambrosius Beurer (Ex Museo Beureriano). The first hummingbird on the left is identified as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), known for its vibrant red throat and green back. The second hummingbird, in the center, is the Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna), distinguished by its long, straight, and white outer tail feathers. The third hummingbird on the right is the Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus), characterized by its long, rufous-colored tail and orange-red throat. The fourth hummingbird, at the back, is the Blue-throated Hummingbird (Lampornis clemenciae), easily recognizable by its bright blue throat and green back. The nest, carefully woven from plant fibers and lichen, is a testament to the dedication and skill of the hummingbird parents. The two perfectly formed eggs, each about the size of a jellybean, represent the next generation of these fascinating creatures. This engraving is a beautiful reminder of the intricacies of nature and the importance of preserving and documenting the natural world.
