EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Hortense Beauharnais, Queen Consort of Holland (1783-1837) 2. Description: This handcoloured lithograph depicts Hortense Beauharnais, the daughter of the legendary Empress Joséphine of France, in her role as Queen Consort of Holland. The image is taken from the esteemed French publication "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, published in Paris in 1852. 3. Background: Born in 1783, Hortense was the eldest daughter of Joséphine de Beauharnais and General Alexandre de Beauharnais. Following the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, Hortense was married to Louis Bonaparte, the brother of the former emperor, in an attempt to secure the Bourbon monarchy's position in France. However, the marriage was annulled in 1812, and Hortense was exiled to Austria. In 1810, she was appointed Queen Consort of Holland when her second cousin, Louis Bonaparte, seized the Dutch throne. 4. Appearance: In this striking image, Hortense is portrayed wearing the regal attire of a Dutch queen. She is dressed in a voluminous, high-waisted gown adorned with intricate gold embroidery and a lace overlay. The bodice features a deep V-neckline, revealing a glimpse of her décolletage, and is cinched at the waist with a sash. Her long, flowing hair is styled in elaborate curls, and she wears a diamond diadem on her head. 5. Significance: This handcoloured lithograph is an essential historical document, providing a visual representation of Hortense Beauharnais's tenure as Queen Consort of Holland. It also serves as a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time, as well as the enduring influence of the French imperial court on European fashion and culture.
