EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases an intriguing assemblage of horseshoe bats and Egyptian bat species. The horseshoe bats, represented by the Greater Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros), and Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum tridens), are named for the distinctive wing flaps that resemble horseshoes. These bats are Old World species, native to Europe, Asia, and Africa, and are known for their echolocation abilities, which they use to navigate and locate prey in complete darkness. The Egyptian bat species depicted in this print include the Commerson's Leaf-nosed Bat (Hipposideros commersonii), Schneider's Roundleaf Bat (Hipposideros speoris), Diadem Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus diadema), Egyptian Slit-faced Bat (Nycteris thebaica), and Egyptian Fruit Bat (Pteropus aegyptiacus). The Egyptian Slit-faced Bat, with its distinctive facial features, is particularly noteworthy for its ability to fold its wings to resemble a cloak, providing excellent camouflage. The Egyptian Fruit Bat, on the other hand, is a large, social bat that feeds primarily on fruit and nectar. This stunning lithograph not only showcases the unique physical characteristics of these bat species but also highlights the intricate details and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration. The careful attention to detail and the accurate representation of these animals make this print a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art or a fascinating glimpse into the past for those interested in the study of bats and their evolution.
