In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, we find a powerful and pious portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Henry III, also known as Henricus III Niger or the Black, from the Salian Dynasty. Born in 1017, Henry was the Duke of Bavaria before ascending to the imperial throne in 1039. His reign, which lasted until his death in 1056, saw him rule over a vast territory that encompassed Germany and Italy. Henry III is depicted here in the grandeur of his imperial regalia, wearing the imperial crown adorned with precious stones and holding a scepter in his right hand. His left hand rests on a globe, symbolizing his dominion over the known world. The classical motifs and the Caesars and Kaisers inscriptions at the bottom of the print underscore the historical significance of this monarch, who was seen as the successor to the Roman emperors. The engraving is taken from Abraham Bogaert's De Roomsche Monarchy, also known as The Roman Monarchy, published in Utrecht in 1697.
